The “Weidendom”, or willow cathedral, is said to be the largest living building
in the Alps and offers the worthy backdrop for a research workshop. One of the items explored in the Weidendom by means of modern technology is the micro-cosmos of life in the water.
The Weidendom is also the starting point for the discovery trail through the alluvial landscape of Lettmair Au. Along an elegant footbridge structure, the trail leads through the alluvial forest and across a backwater of the river Enns. Thanks to the elevated position, visitors have an unrivalled view of the alluvial forest, a habitat that has become very rare today.
The National Park Pavilion in Gstatterboden stands out with its innovative
architecture and includes an info point, an inn and a modern, interactive geology
exhibition. At eight stations, the development of the Gesäuse mountains is explained, and at each of the stations visitors have to become actively involved
themselves: mountains need to be unfolded, glaciers from ice-age wait to be
crossed and virtual climbing tours mastered.
The tour highlight is an exciting virtual flight over the Gesäuse National Park and its surroundings.
