Gams is a ‘GeoVillage’. Everybody in the Gesäuse knows what that means, however if you are visiting from outside, you might need a little help with this term. In this region, some time ago (and when we say some time ago, we mean 250 million years!) there was an ocean – a bay to be exact – with lagoons and long beaches; something that is quite hard to picture when standing in the middle of the Northern Limestone Alps. Wanna learn more? Then a visit to the GeoZentrum Centre in Gams is for you. It is also a part of the Geopark under the auspices of UNESCO.
The GeoZentrum Centre is also a great starting point for walking the GeoPfad Trail. Firstly, because a parking spot is easy to find here and secondly because Kirchenwirt Inn is only a stone’s throw away in case you need a little snack before or after the visit. The trail takes you through the village in the direction of Nothklamm Gorge, passing 48 stations that tell amazing stories about the ocean that once existed here an eternity ago. And if you pay close attention while walking, you can even find some evidence in the form of fossils – just like Sherlock Holmes.
The GeoPfad Trail is part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.
