GeoPfad Gams

GeoPfad Trail.

Follow the GeoPfad Trail.

How to cover 250 million years of the Earth’s history in no time? Easy answer: by visiting the GeoPfad Trail in Gams. On this 5-km-trail around the village you will hike through the woods of the Steirische Eisenwurzen Nature and Geo Park, at the same time as learning all about geology – a topic that suddenly becomes very exciting.

Gams is a ‘GeoVillage’. Everybody in the Gesäuse knows what that means, however if you are visiting from outside, you might need a little help with this term. In this region, some time ago (and when we say some time ago, we mean 250 million years!) there was an ocean – a bay to be exact – with lagoons and long beaches; something that is quite hard to picture when standing in the middle of the Northern Limestone Alps. Wanna learn more? Then a visit to the GeoZentrum Centre in Gams is for you. It is also a part of the Geopark under the auspices of UNESCO.

Understanding the Earth’s history made easy

The GeoZentrum Centre is also a great starting point for walking the GeoPfad Trail. Firstly, because a parking spot is easy to find here and secondly because Kirchenwirt Inn is only a stone’s throw away in case you need a little snack before or after the visit. The trail takes you through the village in the direction of Nothklamm Gorge, passing 48 stations that tell amazing stories about the ocean that once existed here an eternity ago. And if you pay close attention while walking, you can even find some evidence in the form of fossils – just like Sherlock Holmes.

The GeoPfad Trail is part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.

Geology is for crafting.

For hot summer days.

The wooden walkway, spanning a total length of 700 metres, takes you floating through the gorge that the roaring Gamsbach Creek has created here. As you go over stairs and bridges you will encounter dripping as well as raging waters. As the gorge is easily accessible from Gams it is a perfect option for those hot summer days when the temperatures are elevated. Make sure to pay close attention, maybe you’ll get lucky and even find a fossil from times gone by.

Geo at heart.

A small village with a long history. And we aren’t talking about hundreds or thousands of years - nope, more like millions of years. Stones, fossils and other finds that you can stumble across even when just going for a walk are proof of the fact that this town is simply steeped in history. And that there’s a lot to learn here, especially when you take a guided tour through the GeoZentrum Centre, hike the GeoPfad Trail, grind stones in the GeoWerkstatt Workshop or visit Kraushöhle Cave or Nothklamm Gorge.
