National Park Pavilion

In Gstatterboden there is a pavilion...

What would a National Park be without a visitor centre and museums? Nothing! That’s why Gstatterboden boasts the National Park Pavilion, which brings together many wonderful things: delicious cuisine, a lovely museum about the geology of the region and lots of (e)-bikes to rent and discover the surroundings of the little town.

The grey, green and blue building is located a stone’s throw from the camping site at the end of Rauchbodenweg Trail and the Hochscheiben Mountain Bike Trail. You can meet up for a lunch break and enjoy a classic of the Austrian cuisine, the ‘Wiener Schnitzel’, or you can simply start your hike to Ennstalerhütte Lodge. Those who are in need of a bike for their next tour can rent one at the pavilion.

Pretty interactive

The museum in Gstatterboden might be more than ten years old, but it is still as fun as it was on its opening day. The virtual ranger ‘Sepp’ will tell you one or two things about geology and you also will be able to test your knowledge on this topic. You can even take a virtual flight over the National Park and the beautiful mountains of the Gesäuse, allowing you to see Planspitze Peak from a whole different, and even more impressive, angle. Only requirement: no vertigo. But in any case you should bring along two things to the pavilion: time and a healthy appetite.

Haindlkarhütte Lodge

A house near the rock face.

Not too far away from the valley and yet still in the high-Alpine area lies the Haindlkarhütte Lodge. No matter if the lodge is your final destination or just a stop-over on the way to a climbing route, it’s going to be legendary visit. On your way up you will come across chamois and dolomite sculptures and when you finally get to the lodge your hosts will serve you delicious food and put a big smile on your face. Meanwhile, all of this takes place in an arena of stone and rock, directly in front of the towering Hochtor Mountains that look down at you from more than 1,000 metres high.

Like Lifelines through the National Park.

At Weidendom Visitor Centre there’s a lot going on. Besides the Ecological Footprint and the Micro Theatre, you can also wander off and hike Leierweg Trail, Lettmair Au Trail or even take the 'Wild John’ theme trail and learn lots of new stuff. The information charts along the way are barrier-free and the trails themselves are wheelchair-accessible thanks to Swiss-Tracs.

Hartelsgraben Theme Trail

500 metres of elevation – that’s the hurdle you’ll have to take if you want to get to know the oldest forest road in Styria and if you want to marvel at the cascading waterfalls. By reading the charts along the way you’ll discover the history of logging and of course there are far worse things than hiking in the Hartelsgraben Notch and ending the hike at the beautiful Sulzkaralm pasture.

Stop for a while and take in the landscape at the river – it will give you strength.

Sulzkaralm Hut

To be called the most beautiful pasture of a National Park must mean something, right? But how come? Probably because the pasture boasts a lovely lake, a cosy hut and lots of animals, such as marmots, cows and chamois. Or is it because it is conveniently located between Hesshütte Lodge and Hartelsgraben Notch? It doesn’t really matter, all you need to know is that this is a place where you can put up your feet, close your eyes and simply… enjoy!
